ASM Auto Recycling Buying Guide
ASM Auto Recycling (based in Thame, Oxfordshire) is a major player in the UK salvage market. While they are smaller than Copart, they are a primary disposal partner for several large insurance companies.
Many buyers prefer ASM for their wide selection of "Green Parts" and repairable salvage, but their fee structure and collection rules can catch new buyers out.
ASM Buyer Fees Explained
Unlike BCA, ASM does not publish a public rate card for non-registered users. However, based on typical salvage auction structures, you must budget for the following stack:
- 1. Hammer Price Your winning bid
- 2. Buyer's Premium (Indemnity) Typically ~10% to 15%
- 3. Internet Bidding Fee Fixed fee per lot (approx £20-£40)
- 4. VAT (20%) Added to ALL fees above
Note: Some vehicles are "VAT Qualifying," meaning 20% VAT is added to the hammer price too. Check the lot listing carefully.
Strict Storage Rules
ASM is notoriously strict on collection. You usually have 48 hours to collect. If you are late, daily storage fees apply immediately. They do not offer long grace periods.
V5 Logbooks
For Cat S and Cat N cars, the V5C is often destroyed by the insurer. You will likely need to apply for a new one using a V62 form (£25 fee) and wait 4-6 weeks.
Before You Bid
Most vehicles at ASM are insurance write-offs. It is vital you understand the category code before bidding.
Check Hidden History
ASM listings are accurate, but they don't tell you if the car has outstanding finance or mileage discrepancies from 3 years ago.
