⚠️ Buying from Auction? Read This.
A non-compliant vehicle will cost you £12.50 per day to drive in London. This can destroy the profit margin on a "cheap" auction car instantly. Always check the VRM before you bid.
Why ULEZ Compliance Matters for Auction Buyers
When browsing listings on Copart, BCA (British Car Auctions), or Synetiq, the vehicle description rarely highlights ULEZ compliance clearly. As a trader or private buyer, it is your responsibility to verify the emissions standard.
Many "bargain" diesel vehicles (BMW 3 Series, Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class) from 2013-2015 appear cheap at auction specifically because they are Euro 5 diesels, meaning they are not compliant with the London Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) or Birmingham Clean Air Zone (CAZ).
The "Euro 6" Cut-Off Date
To be ULEZ compliant, a vehicle generally needs to meet these Euro standards:
- Petrol: Euro 4 (Registered after Jan 2006)
- Diesel: Euro 6 (Registered after Sept 2015)
Warning for Buyers: Many 65-plate (late 2015) diesels are still Euro 5. Do not assume a 2015 car is safe. Use our checker above to be 100% sure before placing a deposit.
